Some Unique Features
The influence and reputation of our church is county wide. Some members of the congregation come from distances as far away as 80 kilometers. We strive to be a friendly church and to welcome new people.
We have a growing need for youth counseling and follow up.
There is no great winter exodus to places like Hawaii or Arizona. We do experience a decline during the summer holiday period.
Tiny Tots Playschool uses our building during the week in designated areas of the basement.
Special Concerns
Many have a great concern for our youth, those within the church and our community. We have a children’s club with between 40 to 50 attending, and a youth group with between 20 to 45 attending. Many of those coming do not have any other church connection. Leaders are often too stretched to follow-up as needed at times. Many have busy schedules outside of the church or work away from the area so it is difficult at times to fit in informal fellowship times.
Hopes and Needs for the Future
Discipling that will lead to effective personal evangelism. Reach out more to the families with children and youth attending clubs and youth group that do not have any other church connection.
Extension of present home Bible study groups, especially to include non-Christians. Develop young adult fellowship times to bring in unsaved spouses.
Help for the total Christian Education effort in teacher recruitment. Innovations that may increase Sunday school attendance.
Involvement in school and community events.
Organize an alternate dry hang-out place after local youth sporting events.
We presently have a bi-weekly Youth Bible Study and youth events with a devotional approximately twice a month (Gr. 6-12). We would like to see weekly youth nights and possibly work towards a separate Junior High Youth Group and Senior High Youth Group.
Company History
In November, 1906, Rev. TO. Wold organized the Prairie Park Swedish Baptist Church with six charter members. It was affiliated with the Baptist General Conference of America. The church was duly incorporated under the Law of the Province of Alberta in May, 1915. The services were conducted in Swedish until 1930.
The church was built on the SE corner of the NE 2843-13 about five miles SE of Killam. The cemetery is still kept on the same site. Sometime in the summer of 1929 it was decided that the congregation should be moved from the country into town. The old church in the country was sold to the United Church in Sedgewick, Alberta. Many renovations and additions have been completed over the years. A basement was built for the church (on the corner of 48 St and 50 Ave) in 1930 and a sanctuary built on the basement in 1950. Many additions and renovations have been completed over the years.
During the early years baptismal services were held at Battle River, Iron Creek, Sedgewick Lake, and at a lake south of Lougheed. We now have a baptismal tank in the church.
A church plant was started in Forestburg in the Spring of 2003.
