Company History
General History
Ernst Jakob Christoffel, the founder of cbm, was born on September 4, 1876, in Rheydt, Germany. Having been raised in a Christian home, he decided to attend an Evangelical theological seminary in Basle, Switzerland.
While in training during the 1890s, Christoffel received news of riots against Greeks, Armenians and Jews living in Istanbul, Turkey. Having been deeply affected by these events, the desire was aroused in him “…to serve the Lord in the Middle East.”
In 1904, after completing his studies at the seminary in Basle, Christoffel was asked by the Swiss Aid Committee for Armenia to take over the running of two orphanages in Sivas, Turkey, which cared for children
whose parents had died in the riots. Remembering his earlier call and desire to serve in the Middle East, Christoffel accepted the offer and traveled to Turkey with his sister, Hedwig Christoffel. During his time
there, he developed an increasingly acute focus on persons with visual disabilities.
As his time in Sivas was limited, Christoffel hoped to continue his work on behalf of the Aid Committee for Armenia, however, he could not persuade the Committee, or other Christian organizations, to take on the work of helping persons with visual disabilities and so he returned home to Germany. Gradually, Christoffel realized that in order to help those who were visually impaired, he would have to do so alone, without the support of an organization.
In the summer of 1908, Ernst and Hedwig Christoffel left once more for Turkey – this time the city of Malatia – with the support of a few close friends and very little money. They set up their first home for visually impaired children.
Christoffel’s original plan – providing aid primarily to those who were blind – changed rapidly as children with other disabilities were also in need. It was inconceivable to turn them away as everyone else seemed not to care about them. They had been forgotten…
For nearly a century, cbm has rescued the most forgotten people in the world – children, parents and families rejected by their communities, their countries and too often, neglected by the rest of the world. cbm, effectively and lovingly, serves the poor through over 14,000 staff worldwide, of whom 96% are nationals of the countries in which they work. Thousands of caring people have given to support the work, both prayerfully and financially. All, whether they know it or not, are following in the trail blazed by one compassionate
man – a young pastor who made a missions trip to Turkey back in 1908.
When Ernst Christoffel first headed overseas to start that small orphanage for blind children in Turkey, his intentions were humble – to preach the good news of God’s love in word and deed. He had no idea that the fire of his faith would one day spread to over 100 countries on six continents. Nor could he ever have imagined
that his simple ministry to a handful of children would eventually grow to encompass nearly 20 million lost and hurting people worldwide. cbm has survived
and flourished for over 100 years because God has blessed it, and for that we are truly grateful.
On April 2019 cbm Canada becomes Hope and Healing International.
