1st Temiskaming Congregational Church
Who We Are:
1st Temiskaming Congregational Church is a small church located in the Temiskaming Shores area of Northern Ontario. Until recently we were affiliated with the 4 C’s church. However due to the recent doctrinal changes in the 4 C’s constitution, we voted as a congregation to discontinue this affiliation. On a good Sunday, we might have 30 worshippers. However our small size in no way diminishes our love of the Lord, or our mission in the community. We currently host a hymn-sing on the last Sunday of every month that is extremely well attended by many people who are not regular worshippers at our church. Our congregation donates volunteer hours in great abundance to the Salvation Army, the Gideons, most of the senior-citizen houses in the area, the renown Biker’s Reunion, just to name a few. Plus we are one of the few churches in the area to regularly place a float in the annual Santa Clause Parade ( OK, its not a great float, but a float nonetheless and lets the community know that we’re here and available).
Most notably, we are a regional distribution centre for “ Operation Christmas Child” which sends gift boxes to disadvantaged children around the world through Samaritan’s Purse.
Our style of worship is mixed between traditional and “80’s style” contemporary. Our congregation is from all occupations, with a particular emphasis on the agricultural sector.
Our typical service format is as follows:
• Call to Worship
• Welcome and opening prayer
• Opening hymn
• Announcements
• Praise Time
• Congregational prayer
• Offering
• Hymn
• Scripture reading
• Sermon
• (Communion, on certain Sundays)
• Hymn
• Benediction
It should be noted here that this is our present format. If new leadership sees a need to modify this, we are OK with that.
What We Believe:
As a conservative Evangelical congregation, we could go on for pages on what we believe. But since we are trying to keep this document somewhat brief, we shall just bullet the main points.
• There is ONE God, existing as three persons – The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.
• Jesus Christ is one of the persons of God, born mortal of a virgin and perfect in every way. He willingly accepted His death on the Cross to save mankind. He did arise from the dead and now sits at the right hand of God.
• The Holy Spirit was sent by God after the death of His Son to be the Counsellor that was promised continually in the Scripture. He empowers, directs and gifts believers for holy service.
• Baptism and Communion are the two essential symbolic acts or ordinances which our Lord requires.
• Each member of the human race is a sinner by nature and is under God's righteous judgment.
• Christ will return at any moment and will fulfill the prophecies.
What We Are Looking For:
Even though every statement-of-intent probably voices the same stuff, here we go.
Qualifications:
• A personal experience of Salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
• A close and sustaining devotional life rooted in prayer and study of the Scriptures.
• A genuine love of people and willingness to live, work and partner with them.
• A clear personal call to pastoral ministry.
• A clear and growing knowledge of the Holy Scriptures and a need to communicate the truth with passion and accuracy.
• A possession of the Spiritual gifts required for church leadership.
Specifics:
• General pastoral oversight of the welfare of the congregation. The Elders should share this task, but they might need a “kick-in-the-pants” on occasion.
• Helping the Steering Committee and the congregation in determining our vision in this community.
• Leading the preaching and teaching, being aided by others so gifted.
• Planning the worship services along with the worship leaders.
• Identifying and utilizing the specific Spiritual gifts of the congregation.
• Performing weddings, funerals etc. both inside the church and within the community.
What We Offer:
This church is small right now, and you would have to supplement your income. The pastor at the present time makes $17,200, housing allowance is $9,600, $3,105 for health benefits, $300 for book allowance and your portion of CP would be $649.00. This pay is based on the present size of the congregation and would be reassessed as the congregation grows.
