The United Church of Canada is seeking an individual to fill the role of Communications Coordinator – Fundraising in the Organizational Development and Strategy Unit on a permanent full-time basis (35 hours/week).

Within the United Church the General Council Office supports the mission and ministry of the communities of faith and regional councils.  It is the denominational expression of The United Church of Canada, working ecumenically and in global partnership.  

The Organizational Development and Strategy (ODS) Unit supports the General Council Office in the development, execution, and communication of its vision and strategic priorities. The unit helps shape the public face of The United Church of Canada, contributing to the denomination’s principled presence supporting bold witness in the public square and strengthening invitation to the church across the country and its ministries. It assists in nourishing congregations, supporting regional councils, advancing the national program, and contributing to effectiveness of the church.The Unit houses the General Council Office planning function (strategic and operational), reporting and evaluation; a Communications Department of subject matter experts who ensure alignment in key messaging; and a department of staff dedicated to the church’s overarching priority of Growth, who work with the regions to cultivate innovation, strengthen existing congregations toward transformation, and seed and grow new communities of faith.  

The Communications Coordinator – Philanthropy plays a vital role in supporting the retention of current donors and attraction of new donors by ensuring key communications projects run smoothly, on time and within budget.  Reporting to the Director of Communications (with a dotted line to relevant Project Sponsors). This position is responsible for leading and managing special projects and campaigns in support of the Philanthropy Unit and the revenue generation of the Church. They provide leadership and oversight for planning, executing, and evaluating projects according to timelines and budgets, working with project sponsors and with cross-functional stakeholders, ensuring quality control throughout project life cycles. The current main areas of focus are: 

  • Project Management: Plan, organize, monitor, and oversee projects utilizing cross functional teams to deliver defined requirements, and meet strategic communication and organizational objectives; Work with the Project Sponsor and project team to develop project plans, including project life cycles, project requirements, resource requirements, change management processes, risk management, key milestones, communication mechanisms, and deliverables.  
  • Leadership and Problem Solving: Build, nurture and maintain creative and cooperative working relationships across the Communications and Philanthropy staff and provide leadership and problem-solving for assigned project(s), including leading the project team in conjunction with the Project Sponsor. 
  • Reporting, Tracking and Communication: Develop reports, recommendations, and communicates plans via written and verbal presentations to project sponsors, stakeholder groups, and the organization and track and report on project milestones and provide status reports maintaining detailed project documentation.  
  • Administration: Provide administrative support for the project, including data entry, data management and other items as needed to move the project forward.

Working Conditions 

This position works remotely from a home office, and as required, from the General Council Office, currently located at 200-3250 Bloor St. W. in Toronto. Sitting and viewing a computer screen for long periods, keyboarding/using voice recognition software, intermittent physical activity including sitting, standing and being on the phone for long periods of time will be required. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. 



Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Marketing or Communications, or relevant work experience; 
  • Certification recognized by Project Management Institute is a major asset;  
  • Familiarity with project management tools and/or software packages;  
  • 3-5 years of experience in similar roles (non-profit experience preferred);  
  • Knowledge of the non-profit sector and the context to which non-profit organizations operate; 
  • Strong strategic, operational, technical marketing and project management skills;  
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, problem solving and analytical skills;  
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment;   
  • Ability to work independently, perform multiple tasks, complete tasks on schedule and respond to deadlines, and interact effectively with people inside and outside the organization;  
  • Alignment with the Call and Vision of The United Church of Canada – respect, integrity, passion and diversity;  
  • Flexibility to rapidly adapt and respond to changes in environment and priorities;
